About the artist

Born in Beirut to Armenian parents, Marie Loris studied graphic arts in Montreal, Canada and worked in textile design for many years. She also had the opportunity to learn the art of iconography in Eastern Europe and had numerous exhibitions in North America in the 80’s. After relocating to Paris, she entered the world of oil painting through art restoration. She discovered different oil painting techniques used in the past that she has since been applying in her own work. She currently lives in the South of France.

About the work

“There are those who observe and those who are oblivious, those who lead and those who blindly follow, those who believe in love and those who destroy it, those who dare and those who are timorous, those who lie and think we believe them, those who believe in life and those who kill it.

Always observing and analyzing the world around me while moving from one country to another, I have been fascinated by people. The portraits I make depict not only their features but also their most hidden secrets. Their eyes will tell you their stories.

Icons were my first portraits. They led me to explore and go further into both the subject and the technique: from sacred to simply human, from tempera on wood to gouache on paper and then oil paint.”
